Why badminton is the fastest racket sport in the world
Badminton - for many, it sounds like a leisurely game in the park. A shuttlecock, two rackets, a bit of back and forth play. But a recent article in STANDARD shows impressively how wrong this image is: badminton is officially the fastest racket sport in the world - with speeds of over 500 km/h.
And this is where the fascination begins: a sport that is as fast as a Formula 1 car, but is still completely underestimated in everyday life.
The STANDARD takes a closer look at this apparent contradiction and explains why badminton is physically extreme, athletically demanding and tactically highly complex. For us at Attention, this is the perfect opportunity to show what is really behind the „badminton game“ - and why badminton is ideal for anyone who wants to combine speed, precision and fun.
The fastest punch in sport - faster than Formula 1
In 2023, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy set the world record of 565 km/h under laboratory conditions. This speed is measured immediately after impact. In comparison, a golf ball flies at around 390 km/h for a professional and a racing car reaches around 370 km/h.
These extreme figures are not a marketing gimmick, but are confirmed time and again in official measurements and international tournaments. What sometimes looks harmless on television is actually high-performance sport: millisecond decisions, lightning-fast reactions and precise positioning in the tightest of spaces.
Physics to marvel at - the special feature of the shuttlecock
You may be wondering how a person can react so quickly to actually catch the shuttlecock on the other side.
The exciting thing about badminton is not only, how fast the shuttlecock, but also, how he behaves afterwards. Due to its special shape and the arrangement of the feathers, the ball loses speed extremely quickly after the smash.
This means: extremely high initial speed, then a strong, physically induced deceleration - and it is precisely in this field of tension that the players move. If the shuttlecock starts at around 500 km/h, it reaches its opponent at a speed of around 60 km/h.
Hardly anyone has badminton on their radar
Despite these impressive figures, badminton often leads a shadowy existence in the public consciousness. While soccer, tennis and motor sports are omnipresent in the media, badminton is often reduced to a „leisure game in the park“. The STANDARD article touches on precisely this point: it shows how extreme the sport actually is - and how little many people are aware of it.
This is an opportunity for us:
- to show that badminton much more is as „loose back and forth“
- Reduce prejudices („that's not a real sport“)
- to invite people to experience this speed for themselves - live on the court, not just in the article
What does that mean for you as a player or beginner?
The good news is that you don't have to be a professional to feel the fascination of this sport.
Even at amateur level you experience:
- Fast rallies that challenge you to the full
- An intensive full-body workout that trains endurance, speed and coordination
- a game in which tactics and placement are often more important than pure strength
Experience badminton live - instead of just reading about it
The article in STANDARD arouses curiosity - but you can only really understand badminton when you stand on the court yourself. With us at Attention Badmintoncenter Graz you can do exactly that:
- Feel badminton speed up close
